1 dead in Highway 6 wreck

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- A 70-year-old man died on Highway 6 Wednesday afternoon, the coroner's office reported.

According to Berkeley County Deputy Coroner Darnell Hartwell, the accident happened around 4:30 p.m. when Joel Richardson, of Cross, ran off the right side of the road.

His truck traveled several hundred feet before hitting a tree. After Richardson left the roadway there was no indication that he tried to regain control of his vehicle, Hartwell said.{}

A witness told officials that Richardson had slumped over to the right side of the vehicle before hitting the tree.{}

There was no trauma to his body, the coroner's office said. Hartwell pronounced Mr. Richardson dead on the scene.{}

After the investigation by the Coroner's Office and the Highway Patrol, Hartwell ruled his death as a natural, adding that Richardson's death was not caused by the wreck.{}

Richardson was not wearing a seatbelt, officials said.
