MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCIV)The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting that left an elderly man dead outside of a local restaurant.

Shortly after 5 p.m. on Friday, deputies responded to 649 Highway 6 at the corner of Cooper Store Road at Margie's Diner. When they arrived on scene, they found Louis Washington, 72, of Moncks Corner dead from a gunshot wound.

According to Dan Moon with the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office, this is the first shooting death of the year for the agency.

"People are becoming more and more forthright and daring committing these shootings," said Moon. "When our deputies arrived on scene a few minutes later, they found one individual, the victim of a gunshot wound."

Now closed for business when ABC News 4 arrived on scene shortly after 7 p.m., Moon{} believes the diner was open when Washington was killed and found lying by his vehicle.

"We're not releasing anything concerning a motive at this particular time because, frankly, we're not absolutely sure what the motive was," Moon.

As of this publication, deputies have made no arrests and they're relying on the community for tips.

"We do need your help badly on this one," said Moon. "If you have any information at all, please call the sheriff's office at 834-749-4412, that's 843-749-4412."
