BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- One person was killed and two other people were injured early Saturday morning on Interstate 26.
According to Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury, 42-year-old John Alexander Scott III, of Summerville, was a passenger in an SUV when it ran off the road near mile marker 188.
Highway Patrol investigators said the driver fell asleep at the wheel, drove into the median, flipped the SUV and hit a tree.
Salisbury said Scott died at the scene and his death has been ruled accidental. It was unknown if Scott was wearing a seatbelt.
The driver of the SUV and another passenger were taken to Medical University Hospital for treatment; one of them had to be airlifted. Officials do not have information on their conditions.
The accident was investigated by the Berkeley County Coroner's Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
