COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- One person was killed, and 5 others seriously hurt during an early morning crash along I-95 in Colleton County.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol says the crash happened around 3 a.m. Monday near the 61 mile marker. Officials say the vehicle was traveling north when it went off the road and hit trees in the median.
5 victims were taken to area hospitals. The Colleton County Coroner identified the deceased as 21-year-old Jakell Whittington, of Dillon. He died of smoke inhalation, according to the coroner.
The cause of the crash is under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
