100 deadly days of summer begin Memorial Day

      By Tessa Spencertspencer@abcnews4.com

MOUNT PLEASANT, S. C. (WCIV) -- A typical holiday weekend means that there will be more people on the roads. This Memorial Day weekend is not expected to be any exception.

According to AAA, almost 35 million people will be traveling at least 50 miles from home. "We are seeing summer travel trends picking up," says Gail Weinholzer.

That's a 1.2 percent increase over the past 12 months.

With that many people traveling on the roads and highways, you can expect a heavier presence of law enforcement, too.

Cpl. Bob Beres with the SC Highway Patrol reminds motorists that the 100 deadly days of summer unofficially begin this weekend.

"Last year we lost a little over 200 people in those 100 days." Beres said.

He also cautioned motorcycle riders and motorists to be mindful of each other on the roads as well.

      Between January 1, 2011 until May 25, 2011, there have been 44 motorcycle-related deaths in SC{}versus 35 during{}the same time last year.
