13-year-old boy drowns in Colleton County

COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) - Fire and Rescue officials say a 13-year-old boy drowned around 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Colleton County.

The coroner identified the boy as{}Norman Ernest Kirkland Jr.{}of Beaufort.

Officials say Kirkland{}was swimming with family just north of Green Pond at Crosby's Landing in 7-10 feet of water when he went under the water and didn't come back up.

Colleton County firefighters were just three miles away, but were not{}able to save the boy.{}{}First responders recovered the body around 7:30 p.m. Saturday.{} They say it took divers just 10 minutes to find him once they arrived.

Fire and Rescue officials say the tide was going out at the time, creating a noticeable current.

Kimberly Tootle lives near the Crosby Boat Landing and said it's a dangerous place for anyone to swim.

"The Ashepoo is in and out and very fast going. It comes in quiet, goes out fast. A lot of islands floating back and forth -- it has alligators. I'm surprised this water has a lot of activity and poor kid I just feel bad," said Tootle.

The coroner says an autopsy would completed Sunday.

Fire-Rescue officials report the boy's father and mother are Beaufort County firefighters with the Burton Fire Department.

It wasn't the first time rescue crews were called out to a river Saturday. There was another incident involving a group of people tubing on the Edisto River in eastern Colleton County around 1:30 p.m.

Fire and Rescue officials said the tubers were hanging on to tree branches and having problems staying above water before they could be pulled out of the water and brought back to Good Hope Landing. No injuries were reported in that incident.
