14-year-old boy drowns at Lake Wateree

GREAT FALLS, S.C. (AP) - A 14-year-old boy drowned at Lake Wateree State Park while swimming with his family.

The Herald of Rock Hill reports ( ) that Jeramie Coleman drowned Saturday. Fairfield County Coroner Barkley Ramsey says the teen swam too far into the lake and began struggling. Bystanders tried unsuccessfully to rescue him.

Coleman's 18-year-old sister Jasmine Cohen says her brother was a father figure to his eight siblings. She says Coleman "stepped up" after his father died.

Coleman and his family had been at Lake Wateree just days earlier to celebrate his 14th birthday. He was a rising freshman at Great Falls High School.

A hit-and-run driver fatally struck his father, 43-year-old London Coleman, in June 2012, just a few hundred feet from his home. The crash remains unsolved.
