COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Some 1,500 children and librarians from across South Carolina are scheduled to gather at the Statehouse to celebrate literacy and reading.
Thursday's parade begins at 10 a.m. at the State Library and ends at the Statehouse. The participants are taking part in the annual "South Carolina Read-In" to help children understand that those who read, succeed.
The event is sponsored by the South Carolina Association of School Librarians and the South Carolina State Library.
University of South Carolina mascot Cocky is joining the parade. Cocky and his student assistants take books to children around the state through Cocky's Reading Express. It is the university's program bringing books to children who may not have access to them in their homes.Copyright 2014 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
