2 Colleton educators suspended for changing student records

      COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) - Two Colleton County educatorshad their teaching licenses suspended this week for one year.

      According to State Board of Education filings, LeslieStephens and Vennie Mitchell have been suspended until April 8, 2015. Stephensis a guidance counselor at Colleton County High School. Mitchell is thedirector of the Colleton County Alternative School and Pro 9 program.

      Investigators found that during the 2011-2012 school year,Stephens made inappropriate modifications to students records in the districtwithout authority or consent of her supervisors.

      The Department of Education sent Stephens a letter inFebruary telling her she was going to be suspended for her actions.

      The filing states Stephens waived her right to a hearing inthe matter.

      Mitchell was suspended for also changing student records duringthe same year. She was also suspended for one year and has the opportunity tobe reinstated in 2015.

      Both teachers will have to meet all certificationrequirements again if they want their licenses reinstated.

      Mitchell has been a teacher for 32 years; Stephens taughtfor 10 years.
