2nd Guardsman stationed to Gallatin charged with assault faces court martial

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WCIV) - A Coast Guardsman stationed on theCutter Gallatin and charged with assault and battery, cruelty and maltreatmentwill face a special court-martial Wednesday in Norfolk, Va.

According to officials, 44-year-old Lt. Wayne Barfield ischarged with violating four articles of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Barfield is the second member of the Gallatin to be courtmartialed in the last year for alleged inappropriate actions on board the ship.

Vice Adm. Robert Parker, Coast Guard Atlantic Areacommander, decided to convene a court-martial based upon the recommendation ofan Article 32 Investigation. An Article 32 Investigation is similar to a grandjury hearing in the civilian court system.

The investigation concluded that reasonable grounds exist totry Barfield for violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, officialssaid.{}

According to Coast Guard release, Barfield has beenadministratively re-assigned to Marine Safety Unit Savannah and FacilitiesEngineering Base Elizabeth City, N.C., while awaiting trial.
