      One dead in West Ashley motorcycle crash

      WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCIV) -- One person is dead after two motorcycles crashed in West Ashley Friday night while avoiding a traffic stop, said deputies with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office

      Officers with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said two motorcycles were traveling on Wappoo Road near Capri Drive at about 8:30 p.m. when the motorcycles ran off the side of the road and one of them hit a tree.

      This after deputies said{} a pack of motorcycles was reported traveling on I-526 at a high rate of speed.

      A deputy noticed the group on Highway 17 and initiated a traffic stop at the intersection of Wappoo Road, deputies said.

      Three of the seven motorcycles stopped and the other four sped toward Edgewater Park, deputies said.

      A second traffic was attempted{} for two of the motorcycles but the drivers did not stop, deputies said.

      The two drivers took a sharp turn and that's when they crashed, deputies said.

      Beaumont Williams, 20, of Ohio, that hit the tree was transported to MUSC and died from injuries sustained in the crash, officers said.

      Williams was wearing a helmet.

      The driver of the second motorcycle lost control of his bike and fell off, officers said, but suffered only minor injuries.

      The South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the accident.
