3 officers injured during prison "disturbance"

{}RIDGEVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- Three guards at a high security prison in Dorchester County are recovering after a "disturbance" at the Lieber Correctional Institution. A spokesperson for the S.C. Department of Corrections says the injuries those guards sustained are considered non-life threatening. Officials also say the prison is now secure and that the public was never at risk. The disturbance began around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. The prison was considered secure at 3 a.m. Wednesday and remained on lockdown throughout the day. Officials would not release what type of disturbance occurred. They did say the incident was not considered a riot and that officers consistently had control. Initially, there were no reported injuries to any inmates but a later update from officials stated five inmates were treated for minor injuries. Two of the three officers hospitalized were released Wednesday.Prison officials are conducting an internal investigation into the incident. Lieber Correctional is a high security prison that houses death row inmates.
