5-month-old released from hospital, preliminary hearing date set

HANAHAN, S.C. (WCIV) -- The 5-month-old child hospitalized with a skull fracture after his father allegedly threw him to the ground in anger was released Wednesday and placed in foster care.

The child has been at Medical University Hospital since Feb. 25.

The parents, 23-year-old Alan Stilson and 30-year-old Rachael Felicia Encisco, are facing charges of unlawful conduct towards a child. A preliminary hearing for the couple has been scheduled for 10 a.m. on April 19.

Police said on Thursday, Feb. 21, Stilson's 5-month-old son was transported to MUSC on Thursday evening by EMS and found to have a skull fracture{}as well as bleeding and swelling on the brain.

According to the affidavit, Stilson is accused of throwing the baby down on the floor "in anger" because he was crying. The affidavit also states the boy was injured on Feb. 19 but wasn't taken to MUSC until two days later when the father noticed the child "was not acting normal."

The affidavit says the infant suffered "a right skull fracture, bleeding behind the retinas as well as bleeding on the brain."

The child's mother was arrested and charged three days later.
