600-year-old canoe on display on Parris Island
PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - A canoe thought to be almost 600 years old is going on display at Parris Island
The new exhibit is scheduled to open Wednesday at the Parris Island Museum at the U.S. Marine Corps Recruit Depot near Beaufort.
The Native American canoe is estimated to have been built between 1300 and 1420. A local historian found the canoe submerged in the marsh near Parris Island in 1988. It was pulled from the marsh the following year by a team of Marines and archaeologists.
The canoe was restored over 25 years by researchers from East Carolina University and now is ready to go on display. It is being displayed in an exhibit making it appear as if it is again in the marsh.Copyright 2014 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
