82nd Airborne soldier dies on leave in St. Stephen
ST. STEPHEN, S.C. (WCIV) -- A soldier from the 82nd Combat Airborne Brigade died Saturday while on leave in St. Stephen.
According to a release from the 82nd Airborne Division, 23-year-old Spc. Vince E. Gaillard Jr., of Cross, died after he collapsed early Saturday morning during a run.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends affected by this loss," said Capt. Seth Green, commander of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd General Support Aviation Battalion, 82nd CAB, 82nd Abn. Div. "Spc. Vince Gaillard was a dedicated Soldier who was committed one hundred percent to his job and the Soldiers around him. The news of his passing is a great loss to our team."
Gaillard joined the U.S. Army in 2010 as an Aviations Operation Specialist and was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3-82 GSAB, 82nd CAB, 82nd Abn. Div., on Aug. 16, 2013.
He served in Afghanistan from May 2012 to February 2013. Gaillard's commendations include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Army Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, and the Army Aviation Badge.
His cause of death is still being investigated.
