RIDGELAND, S.C. (AP) - The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a federal lawsuit to redraw the districts used to elect members of the Jasper County School Board.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (http://bit.ly/1pDMk93 ) the suit filed Wednesday alleges the districts violate the "one person, one vote" standard of the U.S. Constitution.
The districts were last updated 15 years ago. The ACLU wants an injunction blocking the use of the current maps. Seven of the nine board seats are to be decided in November.
The school district has not responded to the suit.
The suit says the population in the various districts varies as much as 62 percent between the largest and the smallest districts.
The courts have recommended a deviation of no more than 10 percent between districts.
