SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. (AP) - Officials at Shaw Air Force Base have decided the best place for a Nativity scene is next to the installation's chapel.
Air Force spokesman 1st Lt. Earon Brown says a military chaplain blessed the scene after volunteers put it on the chapel grounds, where it has been in previous years.
On Friday, volunteers put the Nativity near a lake where a tree-lighting ceremony was to be held. It was removed after the Military Religious Freedom Foundation complained to the Air Force that it was not secular and represented only one faith group.
Brown says base officials are asking any other faith-based or secular groups who want to put up their own holiday display to coordinate with the base chaplain staff.Copyright 2013 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
