Alabaster the albino gator gets clean bill of health
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Alabaster the albino alligator had a health check-up at the South Carolina Aquarium on Wednesday. He's the resident alligator.
A team of 12 staffers helped the aquarium's veterinarian and herpetologist check Alabaster's health. They had to drain the water from the exhibit and moved the 161-pound alligator to a crate for holding.
The staff vet drew blood and gave Alabaster a physical, and the good news is Alabaster had a clean bill of health. He measured in at 8-feet, 2-inches, too.
He's on exhibit at the Blackwater Swamp enclosure. Officials said he can unfortunately never return to the wild due to his albinism, but officials at the aquarium are more than happy to keep him healthy.
Alabaster has made his home at the aquarium since 2009 and is one of only 50 albino alligators in the world.
