AMBER ALERT canceled : missing girl found in NC

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - An amber alert has been canceled for two-year-old Haley Renae Briggs.

Captain John Rogers of the Summerville Police Department says Haley was found in Haywood County, NC about 25 miles west of Asheville.

He says she was taken by her mother,{}Megan Marie Briggs, from 122 High Bridge Road in Summerville. Police say her mother does not have custody of Haley.

Authorities tell us the grandparents are already on the way to North Carolina to collect Haley who is at the NC Department of Social Services.

"We're still working out the particulars of what she was doing in North Carolina, who she was visiting in North Carolina but it's just great news," said Capt. Rogers. "The child is unharmed and we're making arrangements with the folks that have custody of the child to get reunited."

A neighbor who spoke to one of our photojournalists says the mother is believed to have a chemical imbalance.

SLED sent a notification that Megan Briggs has been arrested. Capt. Rogers tell us she is being charged with burglary in the 1st degree, kidnapping and grand larceny.

"We've gotten some enormous support from the community," said Capt. Rogers. "Through the law enforcement agencies throughout the state, we were able to get the information out. Thankfully, again, she was found safe."
