Are mermaids real?; New exhibit in Charleston
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Perhaps you wholeheartedly believe in mermaids. Maybe you think, "No way." A Charleston exhibit is sure to have visitors debating.
"Mermaids and Merwomen in Black Folklore: A Fiber Arts Exhibition" is a new exhibit at City Gallery at Waterfront Park. It portrays mermaids and merwomen through the eyes of artists from all over the country.
According to curator Cookie Washington, mermaids are believed to have come to South Carolina via slave ships. Speaking on Lowcountry Live, Washington proposed that mermaids would swim alongside the ships, providing comfort to slaves.
Washington commissions poets to submit works about mermaids. The exhibit also features art quilts and dolls.
"Mermaids and Merwomen in Black Folklore: A Fiber Arts Exhibition" runs through October 28.
