COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- The SLED Arson Unit is helping investigate two structure fires that started on Friday, said officials with Colleton County Fire and Rescue.
Officials said crews responded to the first fire at a home on Poplar Street at about 3:00 a.m. and found the single-story, wood-framed home engulfed with 40-foot flames.
The roof collapsed in the center of the home shortly after crews got there, officials said.
It took about 30 minutes for crews to get the fire under control, officials said.
The home was a rental property and was not occupied at the time of the fire, officials said.
The home was heavily damaged.
While crews were still on the scene of the home fire, another crew was dispatched to a structure fire one block away on Edgewood Street.
Officials said the home was fully engulfed when crews arrived.
The building remained standing but officials said there was heavy damage.
Due to the close proximity of the two fires and the suspicious nature of their origins, the Colleton County Sheriff's Office and the SLED Arson Unit were called to assist with the investigations.
