SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Police in coastal Georgia say the Atlanta Humane Society helped more than 30 animals find home and avoid being euthanized.
Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police spokesman Julian Miller says 25 dogs and 11 cats and kittens were transferred from the department's animal control shelter to the Atlanta Humane Society Tuesday for adoptions.
Miller says the Atlanta group also collected four cats and nine dogs from the Hilton Head Humane Society in South Carolina.
Miller says the Atlanta Humane Society worked to find homes for the animals who may have otherwise been euthanized when they heard that Savannah's facility was at near capacity.
Miller says the transfers eliminated about half the dogs in the Savannah shelter and made room for animal control officials to begin housing more.Copyright 2014 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
