Attendance low at public hearing for Santee Cooper rate increase
MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCIV)-- Santee Cooper has proposed raising utility rates over the next two years. Santee Cooper held a public meeting in Moncks Corner Monday to hear from those who would be affected. Board members presented the rate revision proposal to an audience of only about 15 people. If the 3.5 percent hike passes, most customers would see an extra $5.60 a month the first year and an additional $8.29 a month for the second year."It's the first one we've had since 2009," said Santee Cooper spokesperson Laura Varn. "And we had to have it in order to adjust for some increased costs." The public has one more chance to weight in on August 20 at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. The board will then vote on the rate hike during its September 11 meeting. If approved, the new rates would take effect December 1.
