Avondale's art scene is off the charts

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The neighborhood of Avondale in West Ashley has a secret -- a colorful public art gallery located in the back of a service alley.

"The best feeling in the world is to see someone discover this art gallery and they didn't know it was back here," said Geoff Richardson, curator and founder of the chART Outdoor Initiative & Gallery.

Richardson calls it a secret garden of artwork, one he started two-and-a-half years ago. Since then, Richardson says he's curated 50 murals throughout the city.

"I could take you on an hour long tour and tell you about these artists and what their pieces mean to them," Richardson said.

"I can't tell you how many neighbors of the neighborhood say how much they make it a point to walk through the alley to where they are going because they love the art."

With all eyes on Avondale, the art gallery has helped put the neighborhood on the map.

"This big huge piece of art, we are so used to seeing these small frames on a wall, this just takes it to another level," Richardson said.

chART Outdoor Initiative & Gallery will host an Art Walk on April 27 where the alley will be blocked off in order to view the murals without cars in the way. Music, food, live painting and dancing will also be part of the special event.
