SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Dorchester County Council and Dorchester County Sales Tax Transportation Authority held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Bacons Bridge Road Improvement project Wednesday morning. The project Widens Bacons Bridge Road from two to five lanes from Dolphin Drive to SC 61.The new road will have paved & grass shoulders from south of SC 61 to Ashley River Bridge along with curbs & gutters from Ashley River Bridge to the end of the project at Dolphin Drive.A 10-foot multi-use path on the east side of the road will stretch from Ashley River Bridge to Jimbo Road and an 8-foot multi-use path will run from Jimbo Road to the end of project. Another 8-foot multi-use path will be on the west side from Sawmill Branch parking area to end of the project.These improvements will replace bridges at Sawmill Branch, Ashley River, & Ashley River overflow relief. The overflow relief will be replaced with an arch culvert.This project is part of the Dorchester County Sales Tax Transportation Authority's program, which includes 22 road improvement projects. The program is funded by $125 million from the one-cent sales tax and the remainder provided by SCDOT, Federal Highway Administration, private contributors, and other sources. All of the work is expected to be finished in September of 2015.
