Battery to play Portland Timber's U23's in US Open Cup

CHARLESTON, S.C. (BATT) --{} The Charleston Battery takes on the Portland Timbers U23's in the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup next Tuesday night at JELD-WEN Field in Portland, OR; kick off is set for 10:30 PM EST.{} The game will be broadcast live locally on Sports Radio 1450 AM.

The winner of the second round match will advance to face Major League Soccer's San Jose Earthquakes in the third round on Tuesday, May 28.{} Should the Charleston Battery advance they would host the Earthquakes at Blackbaud Stadium on Tuesday, May 28, 7:30 PM.

The Charleston Battery defeated Reading United (PDL) in the second round of last year's tournament but were knocked out in the third round by MLS's New York Red Bulls.

The Charleston Battery has never won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup but has advanced to the final once (2008) and the semifinal on three occasions (1999, 2004, 2008).

The U.S. Open Cup is the oldest annual team tournament in American sports, dating back to 1914. The single-elimination competition began last Tuesday and continues until the final on Oct. 1 or 2. For more information about the tournament and for a full slate of matches please visit
