BCSD: Student brought gun to school

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (WCIV) -- Officials with the Berkeley County School District{} announced Tuesday that a student brought a gun to Sedgefield Middle school.A spokesperson said the gun was found in a student's backpack but there was no interruption to the school day and no injuries."Charges were filed with law enforcement, and the student was immediately removed from campus," said district spokeswoman Susan Haire. "Per the district's protocol and as clearly stated in District Policy JDE and the BCSD Student Handbookthe school has recommended the student for expulsion."{} Sheriff's deputies said the school resource officer was contacted Tuesday morning by the relative of a 14-year-old student who said another student was going to cause harm, so the officer had the student removed from class.When the student was questioned, the teen admitted to having a semi-automatic handgun. The student told the officer that he had taken it from his mother without asking, deputies said. Deputies went on to say that the gun incident stemmed from a previous altercation with the 14-year-old.{}The student with the gun was taken into custody and placed in the care of the Department of Juvenile Justice. The school notified parents of the situation via the parent notification system.
