BCSO: Toddler dies after being hit in head with dumbbell

ST. HELENA ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- The charge against a woman arrested in connection with the traumatic injury of a two-year-old toddler has been upgraded to homicide after the toddler's death, said officials with the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

LaQuana Chisolm, 26, was arrested Wednesday and charged with unlawful conduct toward a child after the daughter of Chisolm's boyfriend was admitted to the hospital Tuesday night with a life-threatening head injury, said deputies.

Deputies said Chisolm was watching the toddler and her own three children at her boyfriend's home on Seaside Road while her boyfriend was at work.

Deputies said Chisolm hit the two-year-old girl in the head with a weighted dumbbell.

Chisolm did not seek medical help or tell anyone about the injury, said deputies.

Another family member came home about three hours after the toddler had been hit and saw her on the couch making unusual noises, said deputies.

Deputies said the family member discovered the toddler was unconscious, called her father and the father took her to the hospital.

Chisolm initially told deputies and hospital staff the toddler was injured after falling off the bed but later admitted she hit the child with a dumbbell while exercising, said deputies.

The girl was airlifted from Beaufort Memorial to MUSC in critical condition and pronounced dead Thursday, said deputies.

Chisolm's charge was upgraded to homicide by child abuse.

She was released on bond Wednesday for her original arrest and turned herself into deputies Friday night for arrest on the new charge, said officials.
