HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Beaufort County is buying a 230-acre tract that was the focus of a 6-year legal battle with a developer.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports that the county council announced plans Monday to buy Pinckney Point between the Okatie and Colleton rivers.
The land was the object of a 6-year battle with a Florida developer who wanted to develop the property with 76 high-end houses that would have septic tanks. The plans also called for a marina with 40 boat slips.
The county opposed the project, expressing worry about water quality in the area.
The money for the buying the property comes from $25 million in bonds to protect rural and critical land. The county council also approved the bond program on Monday.
