HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is developing a program encouraging utility workers to watch for crimes and suspicious activities.
Sheriff P.J. Tanner tells The Island Packet of Hilton Head the program is not about sending snoops into people's homes. He says that utility workers cover a lot of ground around and can be another set of eyes for law enforcement.
Tanner says the program is just being started.
Andrew Rein with Hargray's Communication says the sheriff's department made a presentation about the effort to the company.
Rein says it is like a neighborhood watch and asks simply that workers keep their eyes open and if they see something suspicious to call authorities.
