BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - Merchants in Beaufort are concerned that plans to pave the street through the city's main shopping district just before the busy Labor Day weekend will hurt business.
The Beaufort Gazette reports paving Bay Street along the city's riverfront is planned for the week of Aug. 26, closing the street to traffic. The state Department of Transportation is using federal money and city officials say they have no control over the schedule.
Boutique owner Darlene Kelly wonders who will pay her bills while the street is closed.
LaNelle Fabian, the director of Main Street Beaufort, says there's no good time to close the street. She says it would be better to do it in January.
