Benefitfocus expansion project to create 1,200 new jobs

DANIEL ISLAND S.C. (WCIV) -- Benefitfocus Inc. announced Monday it will break ground on a building project that will expand the size of its technology campus from 13 acres to 40 acres.

The company is a leading provider of cloud-based benefits software solutions.

The expansion project is expected to create 1,200 new jobs.

"We are creating a community within a community, and it's exciting to see this expanded technology campus come to life," said Shawn Jenkins, president and CEO of Benefitfocus. "We are committed to the Charleston community and to our Daniel Island neighbors especially. Our passion for design and engineering is such a powerful part of what makes Benefitfocus great, and we believe the new campus will add to the vitality of the region as we continue to attract world-class engineering talent."

The campus expansion will triple the size of the current Benefitfocus headquarters to nearly 500,000 square feet. It will include wide walking paths, cart paths and trails to connect the company's five buildings ad create a "campus" style community for employees.

The Customer Success Center will house the growing base of customer implementation and service associates. The center will be home to the new training and certification programs for associates, customers and ecosystem partners. It is expected to be complete in the first quarter of 2015.

"My hearty congratulations to Team Benefitfocus. While Charleston's economy has enjoyed many years of steady growth in the tech industry, today's announcement by Benefitfocus represents the single largest combination of capital investment and job creation in our history," said Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr.

Governor Nikki Haley joined Jenkins for the ground-breaking ceremony on Tuesday.

"All of these jobs coming together are allowing great options for the people in South Carolina. We are at a five year unemployment low and continue to be on fire so were going to continue to keep doing what we're doing, which is we have a great state, we're going to keep on selling it," said Haley.

Charleston Mayor Joe Riley says when a company like Benefitfocus expands the entire community will benefit.

"The growth in the knowledge based economy that Benefitfocus is leading the way on is a huge game changer," said Riley.{}
