DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) - Benefitfocus is known for being one of the national leaders in software, managing healthcare and corporate benefits. On Tuesday, the company will celebrate the grand opening of a new Design and Engineering building.

"It's going to be 80,000 square feet focused around engineering activities so it will hold all our software development and a more technical role in building our software," Andy Howell, COO of Benefitfocus, said.

The new digs will focus around software development and serve as space for the more technical roles in the company where 400 to 500 associates will work in the new building.

Howell said several hundreds of new jobs will be added over the next couple of years because of the expansion.

"This is a huge advantage for us because we can have this design and engineering center to allow our engineers a really unique space for collaboration and for collaboration areas where you can watch what you have built in real-time with your team," Howell said. "So it's going to make a much more dynamic real-time development environment."

Governor Nikki Haley and Mayor Joe Riley are both expected to help cut the ribbon for the new Design and Engineering building at 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
