Berkeley Coroner IDs body found in Cooper River near Navy base

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Berkeley County Coroner on Thursday identified the man's body found in the Cooper River earlier in the day as the man who disappeared after wrecking his car on I-526.

The coroner's office identified the man as 38-year-old James Brown, of Wando.

Brown's body was found in the Cooper River near the old Navy base in North Charleston. Brown was last seen on the Don Holt Bridge on Nov. 24 after crashing his car. He walked away from the accident, officials said.

Charleston County was investigating Brown as a missing person.

The coroner said an autopsy would be performed to figure out how Brown died.

Officials around 1:30 p.m. determined that Berkeley County is the agency with jurisdiction. However, no one from Berkeley County was at the scene at the time of the determination.
