Berkeley sheriff to ask council for money to staff jail

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) - Berkeley County's sheriffplans to ask Monday for money to pay for officers at the jail so that thesecond floor of the facility can be filled and staffed.

It's been several years since the county opened its new jailfacility to house more inmates, but only the first floor of the three-storybuilding is being used because there is not enough money to fund officers onthe upper floors.

Sheriff Wayne Dewitt says this has created issued since thejail opened. On Monday, he will go before the Berkeley County Council to askfor enough money to staff the second floor of the jail.

Officials with the sheriff's department did not haveinformation on how much money was being requested or how many officers areneeded to staff one floor of the jail.
