Biden: Infrastructure a win for the nation

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP/WCIV) - Vice President Joe Biden says continued investment in infrastructure is a big win not just for local communities, but the entire nation.
Biden spoke Monday during a visit to the port in Charleston, S.C., along with Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx.
The two visited a port terminal in nearby Mount Pleasant and spoke with longshoremen before speaking to a crowd of about 300 on the docks.
Charleston is working on a harbor deepening project expected to cost more than $300 million. Biden says he didn't want to short circuit the study but said he knows what the results will be - that the harbor should be deepened.
Later, Biden was heading to Savannah, Ga., to visit the port there. The ports of Charleston and Savannah are in keen competition.
That competition was the focus of Vincent Sheheen's statement released after Biden's visit Monday.
"The Port of Charleston is a key player in South Carolina's economy -- creating jobs, spurring commerce and helping our state to grow. The deepening of the Port of Charleston is imperative to keeping our state competitive and I am proud to have worked across the aisle and consistently fought to fund the dredging and help South Carolina move forward. The number one job of a governor is to provide opportunity and deliver results for businesses and families to thrive," he said.
"Our current Governor chose to side against the Port of Charleston once and create jobs in Georgia instead of our home state -- we need a leader who won't let campaign contributions or politics get in the way of the best interests of South Carolina any longer."Copyright 2013 The Associated Press.
