MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- A new high school has been proposed for Mount Pleasant, but already questions of it being big enough have surfaced.
A Charleston County School Board blue ribbon committee says the new school should be built at the old Wando High School site. The group presented its recommendation Wednesday night to parents at Cario Middle School.
There are nearly 3,700 students at the current Wando High School, 700 more than its designed maximum.
The new school would be big enough to hold 1,200 to 2,000 students.
The committee has been meeting since October and was created to form plans for a November referendum that could pay for the construction of a new school.
"So far from parents it's really positive. Most parents who have kids in elementary school are real excited about hearing the options. They really want everything that Wando has to offer and lots of people will send their kids to Wando because they'll still be zoned there for it. But I think people feel like with 3,700 kids at Wando, that there's a want and need for a second high school," said Kate Darby, the chair of the blue ribbon committee.
Darby said the new school would most likely be zoned at first and could open by 2019. But these are just the recommendations of the group, nothing has been set yet.
Another public meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at Moultrie Middle School.
