Body found in Colleton house fire

COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- One person died in a house fire in Colleton County Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

According to Colleton Fire Chief Barry McRoy, firefighters were called shortly after 1 p.m. to a house fire on Jones Swamp Road. A passer-by called 911, McRoy said.

McRoy said the house was probably built in the 1940s and was half-involved by the time firefighters got to the scene. He said it took about 25 minutes for the firefighters to contain the fire.

While checking the house, fire investigators found a person's body. The coroner's office has not released the identity or cause of death, but foul play is not suspected.

State Law Enforcement Division officers, as well as deputies and the coroner were called to the scene after the body was found. SLED is assisting fire investigators to help determine what caused the fire and where it started, McRoy said.

He added that calling SLED to help in the investigation is standard in all fatal fires.
