Boeing to lease NASA hangar, begin making spacecraft
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV)Boeing is taking its operations out of this world.
The aerospace giant, which operates a plant in North Charleston, is set to announce plans today to lease the hangar in Florida that housed the space shuttles to build similar crafts that will bring people and cargo to space.
Florida Governor Rick Scott's office and officials at the White House confirmed plans over the weekend.
The deal will create 140 jobs in the next 18 months and up to 550 jobs by 2015.
Florida's Space Coast lost jobs as the space shuttle program was retired earlier this year.
The reusable space capsules will be able to bring up to seven people into space.
Right now, the United States doesn't have a way to transport people or cargo to the International Space Station.
