MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- Boone Hall Plantation was transformed into a Civil War battlefield this weekend.Reenactors gathered to recreate the assault on Battery Wagner. The 1863 battle featured the 54th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first official African American unit in the United States.Participants said reenactments help people better understand historical events."Not only is it a great opportunity to enjoy comradery among your friends and partners but it also gives you a greater understanding of history," said Randy Burbage, one of the reenactors. "And we need to remember that terrible time in American history when thousands of men died for a cause they believe in."The battle was one of the largest in the Charleston area. Union troops wanted to capture Battery Wagner so they could take Morris Island, start bombarding Fort Sumter and capture Charleston.
