British ambassador to US visits Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- The British ambassador to the United States is visiting Charleston.

Sir Peter Westmacott visits the Seraph Monument on the grounds of The Citadel on Monday. The HMS Seraph was a British submarine that played a role in a World War II ruse to convince the Germans that the Allies would invade Sardinia when the real target was Sicily.

Later, Westmacott speaks at a luncheon meeting of the World Trade Center in Charleston. The topic of the talk is strengthening trade and investment relations between the United States and the United Kingdom.

Westmacott has been British ambassador to the United States since January of last year. He was British ambassador to France from 2007 to 2011 and before that served as ambassador to Turkey.
