Burke's record-setting shot putter commits to Southern Illinois

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - A Burke High School student set anindoor shot put record of 56-feet, 7.5-inches at the New Balance IndoorNationals over the weekend.

Raven Saunders is one of the top shot put recruits in thecountry and, knowing that, she waited until setting the new record to announceher college choice.

Saunders said it was down to Arizona State and SouthernIllinois, but on Monday the track-and-field star said she was heading to theMidwest.

"Southern Illinois Carbondale has a great history ofdeveloping throwers.{} The head coach wasan Olympian and coached many other NCAA champions," she said.

Her coach, Herbert Johnson, said Saunders made a greatdecision and really put Charleston on the map for NCAA sports.

"This is not just great for Burke High School. This is greatfor Charleston itself," he said. "When people put us on a site, it's fantastic."

Saunders said her next goal is to set the South CarolinaState Indoor and National Outdoor records before she graduates this spring.{}
