Burning ban on Hilton Head Island taking effect

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - A ban on burning yard debris takes effect this weekend on Hilton Head Island. Some people are now wondering how they will dispose of their lawn clippings, leaves and branches.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports that town council approved the ban this week and it takes effect Sunday.

Councilman Marc Grant was the only vote against the ban. Grant says burning should be allowed until the town comes up with a way to remove the debris.

The town is considering an ordinance to pick up debris from those who cannot haul it away or afford to pay someone to do so. But details have not been worked out.

The ban does not apply to small outdoor recreational or cooking fires.
