CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - A 2007 Citadel graduate will be remembered during the 36th Cooper River Bridge Run.
Army Sgt. Aaron X. Wittman was killed Jan. 10 in Afghanistan when his unit was attacked by small arms fire while on mounted patrol. It was his second tour and was the first casualty of war in 2013.
A scholarship in Wittman's name has been endowed at The Citadel by his family and his classmates. More than 30 cadets will participate in the bridge run along the side of dozens of Wittman's classmates, friends and family. The run will raise money for the scholarship in his memory.
Wittman's Lima Company classmates created the Aaron Wittman Foundation to carry on his legacy and honor his sacrifice.
"We're honoring someone who has done such wonderful things for out country," said Cadet Legrand Guerry. "He shown such patriotism and pride and we feel that we can take that on and show the patriotism and pride as well."
Anyone who wishes to donate to the Aaron X. Wittman scholarship fund can do so at the bridge run by locating one of the Citadel Cadets. They will be wearing tan t-shirts that have the foundation on them and wear their ACU pants and boots.
