Cancer survivor encourages others to give

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - Last holiday season, Yolanda June didn't know how she would be able to buy Christmas gifts for her four daughters. June was battling thyroid cancer and couldn't work.
But, thanks to a group of strangers through Families Helping Families, June can attest the goodness of others.
"When they called and said that, 'Your stuff is here'. I said 'My stuff?' And, then I went there, it was there," said June. "They even had something in there for me."
June never knew people in the Lowcountry could be so giving.
"I kept asking you know, 'Can I give something back? A card or just to say thank you?' And, they said, 'It's fine. It's fine'.There are good people out there that care about others," June said.
Now June is working and treating her cancer with a simple pill a day. She is now using her survival as motivation to give back.
"I pray hard and I ask God every night, you know, give me the strength to keep my mind focused to be right for my girls," June said. "And, to let them see when others help us, that's what I want them to grow up to do -- to help others."
Families Helping Families was June's saving grace.
"Its hard to explain to little girls that you're not going to get nothing or they knowing and watching the little cartoons and stuff on T.V. and seeing the kids opening up gifts. That's what they think Christmas was about," she said.
Because of her experience, June is encouraging everyone to give back this holiday season.
