SULLIVANS ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - A cannon dating to well before the Revolutionary War and one of the three oldest in Charleston is now on display at Fort Moultrie on Sullivans Island.
It's the first original cannon to go on display at the fort which has several reproductions of guns from the period.
The cannon is believed to have been cast sometime between the 1690s to the early 1720s.
It was found in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1988. The cannon is the type that was used on naval vessels and arrived in Charleston several months ago.
It's on display just in time for Carolina Day ceremonies. Tomorrow is Carolina Day, the anniversary of the 1776 battle at Fort Moultrie where patriots turned back a British fleet attacking Charleston.Copyright 2014 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
