McCLELLANVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- Deputies responded to a home on Mercantile Road Saturday for reports of loud music and ended up finding over 50 underage kids at a party with beer and booze.
According to an incident report, deputies found a large group of teens around a bonfire and once those teens saw the deputies, many of them went running into nearby woods. Others got into their vehicles and drove away. Some of the kids stopped when the deputies called out to them and some of the ones who ran into the woods came back because "they didn't know where they were running to."
Deputies said they saw several of the kids pouring out beer cans and clear bottles into the kitchen sink of the home. Meanwhile, the homeowner, 49-year-old Eleanor McDowell Richards, came up to the deputies. The deputies note in the report that Richards was "belligerent" and appeared to be "under the influence of medication" as she was slurring her words and had trouble standing.
Deputies also report she tried to block their view of the teens getting rid of the alcohol by going into the home and locking the front door. She failed, however, to lock the back sliding door so deputies went in that way and searched the home.
Deputies said they found kids "hiding upstairs, in closets and in a downstairs bathroom in the shower." Everyone was gathered up and taken outside to the bonfire where other teens were seen kicking beer cans into the flames.
According to the report, 50 citations were issued for being a minor in possession of beer. Most of the teens were 18 but ages ranged between 15 and 19-years-old. The majority of them lived in the Mount Pleasant area and went to Wando High School.
Richards is charged with contributing to the delinquency of minors.
