CCSO investigates shooting at Johns Island gas station

JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- Charleston County Sheriff's Deputies responded to reports of a shooting at a Kangaroo Convenience Store on Main Road Wednesday evening.

According to deputies, they arrived around 7 p.m. and were told that two vehicles fled the scene. Witnesses saw a Hispanic man shoot a black man and then drive off. The witness was alert enough to get a license plate number for police.

A spokesperson for the CCSO says one vehicle involved was found getting on to I-526 Eastbound and was stopped near{}the Hwy 61 exit.

Another witness said she saw money "blowing around" on Main Road and then saw a heavy police presence at the nearby gas station. Thinking the gas station had been robbed, she collected what she could (about $260) and turned it over to police.

Investigators say the 30-year-old victim was taken to Roper St. Francis for minor injuries.

A second vehicle involved was found at a residence located off of Walpole Way, where the suspect was located.

Fabian Keith Hernandez, 28, was arrested and charged with attempted murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
