CCSO: One dead, one injured in home invasion, shooting

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- One person is dead and another was treated for head injuries after a home invasion and shooting early Saturday morning, said officials with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said deputies were called to a home on Greenland Road on Johns Island at about 2:40 a.m. where a man told them three black males with guns had kicked in the back door and assaulted him and a female.

While the man was hit in the head by one of the suspects, Donnetta Heyward, 27, of Charleston was taken outside by the other suspects, officials said.

Deputies said the suspects asked the victims, "Where is the money?"

Wadel Heyward was able to make the call to 911 but had to leave his injured sister.{}

In a call to 911, Wadel Heyward was able to tell the operator he was sleeping at the time of the break-in and he was hit in the head with the butt of the gun by men in masks.

Wadel Heyward also told officers his sister was taken outside when he heard two or three gunshots. A few seconds later, Donnetta{}Heyward came inside and said she had been shot.

Officials said the suspects left the scene.

Donnetta{}Heyward was taken to Medical University Hospital where she later died, officials said. The man was taken to St. Francis Hospital where he was treated for his head injuries and released.

Officials said a late-model, green Honda was seen leaving the area shortly after the gunshots were heard.

The Charleston County Coroner's Office said Monday afternoon that Heyward's cause of death was a gunshot wound.

Officials said there was no immediate evidence found at the scene that would suggest this shooting is related to or connected to the recent shootings in North Charleston.
