Charleston City police got a call from the school's principal that 26-year-old Eric Helms had had "sexual relations" with a student.
The victim is listed as being an 18-year-old female.
According to the Charleston County Sheriff's Office, the relationship has been going on for several months and is believed to have been consensual.
"It's preliminary information and we believe that's the case, Charleston County Sheriff's office spokesperson James Brady said.
No charges have been made at this time.
"Criminal charges could come obviously as a result of the investigation if they are warranted based on what's discovered in the investigation, Brady said.
Helms is listed as being the head of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at West Ashley High.
Jason Sakran with the Charleston County School District said a West Ashley teacher was let go but it was a "personal matter" and didn't want to comment further. He directed all questions to law enforcement.
